Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television

The exciting growth of the Canadian film industry in the 1970s led to the formation of the Academy in 1979. Its development was based on a vision to build an organization that would both unify the film industry across Canada and inaugurate a national showcase to annually celebrate its outstanding achievements.

On April 11, 1979, the now late actor/director Al Waxman announced the official formation of the Academy of Canadian Cinema. The founding members served energetically on various working committees. Criteria for membership was established, regulations and voting procedures were approved, the legalities of the new organization were worked out, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema received its first official incorporation on June 20, 1979.

The Academy continued to flourish and expand, and today unifies both the film and television industries. It is also proud to include an active membership that has reaches from coast to coast.

For over 25 years, the Academy has continued to dedicate itself to Canadian film and television. Its mandate is to honour outstanding achievements; to heighten public awareness and increase audience attendance and appreciation of Canadian film and television productions; and to encourage the highest standards of film and television production in Canada .

The Academy continues to commit itself to the film and television industry in Canada and to explore new ways to celebrate its growth and remarkable history. Membership at the Academy continues to grow along with the respect and appreciation of its board, staff, and the Canadian film and television industry.
